The Nightclub is the church [or the mosque, synagogue, or templ] of the LGBTQ+ Community. So much so that in the '70s, the legendary parties by DJ Larry Levin in New York were named "Saturday Mass".

'Our Spaces: Queerness & Nightlife' exhibition looks at the history of clubbing in Brighton and beyond and the lived experiences and imaginary worlds of LGBTQ+ people in that space.

The exhibition, created for LGBT History Month, features work that considers queer joy as a radical act, the 'gay club' as a safe space, and the many diverse experiences of the queer people who frequent it.

The timely exhibition stresses the importance of these spaces in the face of closers of clubs and pubs because of gentrification and when many aspects of LGBTQ+ culture are moving to virtual spaces. When LGBTQ+ rights are threatened in many places, we would like to remember and learn how these spaces - from NY'S Stonewall to Brighton's oldest gay bar Bulldog closed down recently - were the building blocks of our community.

Curated by Dr Khaliden Nas in collaboration with the award-winning party and collective Polyglamorous, and includes a group of Brighton-based artists showing photography, digital art, films and live art.

The exhibition is accompanied by several free workshops and a zine.
