"International Women's Day exhibition - by SEA-Studio & guests artists
Jubilee Library 6-13 / March
The exhibition and the Jubilee Library's foyer concern discrimination, restrictions and sexist laws inflicted on women worldwide, from Iran to the USA, Yaman to Israel.
The exhibition comprises a series of photos and a video dance using data from the UN and other agencies and a take on the costume created for the TV series The Handmaid's Tale, which has been adopted in feminist and human rights demonstrations in the USA and elsewhere. The photoshoot and video were created by SEA-Studio and the artists Gil Mualem-Doron and Lya Abdou Issa [aka @blkdimondance].
The second part of the exhibition includes works by dozens of Iranian artists who created work as part of the protest movement "Woman, Life, Freedom". The movement sprung in response to the tragic killing of 22-year-old Mahsa (Zhina) Amini by Iran's "morality" police. Iranian women and girls are leading a movement to respect human rights and against discriminatory laws and practices. About the curator
Sara Alsharif is an Egyptian human rights activist and digital rights researcher with a master's degree from the University of Sussex in Digital Media.
She has been living in Brighton since 2019, contributing to different projects, activities and campaigns in Brighton and Hove.
