Jose Gomez

Gay Boy, 36 x 31 x 2 cm, Acrylic on board

'The creation for this series of figurative paintings based on male figures and its surroundings are an outcome of my emigrate identity. The figures are anonymous beings who display unique characteristics - mainly filled with erotic traits found in peculiar situations. Most of all the paintings evoke photographs that I’ve taken randomly; those are of curious scenes and [are] re-enacted in my artworks; using vivid colours in an established form of expression, sometimes I change the original scenes while adding new elements to their composition.

These paintings explore positive masculinity, represented as erotic gay love, men being alone or in [the] company of popular elements or nature.'

About the artist

Jose Gomez is a visual artist, originally from Seville and based in London. His practice is about perception, form and colour: visual and conceptual. He explores how mindfulness as a natural quality touches the senses in collective and popular territory.

As an artist he is mainly interested in creating works that call for the participation of the viewers. He considers his cultural identity, from Southern Spain, a significant inspiration for his work as well as his observations and experiences from being a pleasure-seeking Londoner. As a dynamic and innovation-seeking artist he evolves in each series of work, using different materials and techniques which allow him to explore various perspectives with energy, expression and freedom. The human figure and vivid colours are present in his paintings; it allows him to switch seemingly from abstract to figurative composition.
